1971-1972 Season

1971-72 was a pretty good year for the California Golden Seals, by Seals standards at least. Although they finished in sixth place, the team had a lot of young talent and seemed to be the up and coming team in the West Division. The Seals were in a position to make the playoffs but lost its final six games and finished six points out of the final playoff spot. New General Manager Garry Young, previously a scout in the Bruins organization, set out to build a younger, stronger team. The Seals improved from 45 points to 60 points in Young's first season. Fred Glover was fired as coach just two games into the new season and was replaced by former Flyers coach Vic Stasiuk. 1971-72 also marked the arrival of rookie goaltender Gilles Meloche who was to remain the Seals starting goalie for the rest of the franchise's existence. Meloche's Seals debut was a 2-0 shutout of the mighty Bruins in Boston. On the unusual side of things, Charlie Finley decided that if the Oakland A's looked good in white shoes, than the Seals would look good in white skates. The white skates didn't go over too well with the players or the trainers whice they had to be painted white. Of course, they had to be constantly repainted since puck marks and scuffing would inevitably occur. Some players joked that the skates weighed 20 pounds by the end of the season. Another player said that on TV, it looked like the Seals were skating on stumps since their white skates blended in with the ice. Things seemed to be looking up in Oakland but...
