1972-1973 Season

If the Seals took a step forward in 1971-72, they tooksome large steps backward in 1972-73. With the birth of the WHA, salaries across the NHL jumped significantly. Suddenly, players had leverage in their negotiations with the owners at contract time. Many NHL players jumped to the new league but the Seals were the hardest hit since Charlie Finley refused to pay the players increased salaries. The Seals lost Bobby Sheehan, Gerry Pinder, Tom Webster, Paul Shmyr, Wayne Carleton, Norm Ferguson, Gary Jarrett and others to the new league. Instead of an up and coming team, the Seals were suddenly a team lacking in talent. Midway through the season, GM Garry Young was fired in a dispute over Dick Redmond's contract when Charlie Finley claimed he did not authorize the money Young and Redmond agreed upon. Redmond was traded to Chicago by early December and the Seals lost another good, young player. When Young was fired, Fred Glover took over as GM and "interim coach". There were some bright spots, however. Joey Johnston emerged as the team's leading goal scorer while rookie Hilliard Graves added 27 goals for the Seals. Despite a high goals against average, Gilles Meloche continued to play well behind a team that gave him little defensive support. The Seals ended the season with as many wins as ties (16) and finished in last place in the NHL's West Division.
