1974-1975 Season

The NHL continued to run the Seals for the 1974-75 season and more changes were made. The green and gold uniforms and white skates of the Finley era were replaced by new "Pacific Blue, gold and white" uniforms which were a cross between teal and aqua. Change was in the air as the league tried to keep costs down. New GM Bill McCreary traded Ivan Boldirev, Stan Gilbertson, Craig Patrick, Reggie Leach and Hilliard Graves and the team began anew with younger (and less expensive) players. For a change, the Seals kept their first round draft pick and selected defenseman Rick Hampton, touting him as the next Bobby Orr. Hampton was only 18 years old but the team designated him the savior of the franchise and he played in the NHL his first year. In February, McCreary fired Marshall Johnston as coach and went behind the bench himself, hoping to lead the club to a playoff birth. Unfortunately, the Seals slumped down the stretch and fell well short of a playoff birth. The Seals did improve by 15 points over the year before but were still last in the NHL's new Adams Division.
